Expansion of the Family and Medical Leave Act

TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 3, 2009) -- On January 16, an amended policy titled Final Regulations of the Family and Medical Leave Act went into effect, expanding the FMLA for the first time since its introduction in 1993.


Under the amended law, eligible employees are now entitled to the following:


Up to 12 weeks to attend to issues related to a family member being on active duty or having been notified of an impending call or order to active duty in the Armed Forces, and


Up to 26 weeks during a single 12-month period to care for a family member who suffered an injury or illness while on active duty in the Armed Forces.
