Supporting USF Programs

TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 16, 2010) -  ARCS Foundation – Tampa Bay (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) has received its official chapter status from the national ARCS Foundation, Inc., after officially being inducted as the first ARCS organization in the state of Florida.

The Tampa Bay ARCS Chapter will serve to support graduate students within specific degree programs at the University of South Florida, putting the local community on the map as a one that supports and encourages American scholars in the advancement of science and technology.

“Our mission in Tampa Bay is to establish funding to attract talented ARCS Scholars to USF’s advanced degree programs in Marine Science and the Cancer Biology PhD program at Moffitt Cancer Center,” said ARCS Foundation-Tampa Bay President Karen Krymski said. “The current goal is to attract and award several $15,000 awards over three years to outstanding USF graduate students. Over time, and with the community’s support, we hope to continually increase our support to additional USF students.”

The ARCS Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) organization founded In Los Angeles in 1955, provides scholar awards to academically outstanding United States citizens studying to complete their degrees in science, medicine and engineering, thereby contributing to the worldwide advancement of science and technology.

 ARCS Foundation is a volunteer women's organization, with more than 1,500 members in 17 independent chapters across America. Contributions may come from corporations and individuals, although membership to the group is limited to women. The Gates Foundation has been a strong supporter of ARCS, contributing substantially to the development of new chapters.

Tampa Bay Founding officers also include Linda Seefeldt, vice president and president elect; Janet Dickinson, CPA, treasurer; and Elaine Bispo Smalling, secretary. There are 58 founding members for ARCS Foundation - Tampa Bay. The chapter is seeking to expand in membership to create more ARCS funding for Tampa Bay.

The first official event to celebrate the new Chapter status will be “Fashion and Fun Down to a Science” on March 12, 2010 from 11:30- 2 p.m. at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort in St. Petersburg. The event is open to the public; for reservations email or call (727) 821-5166.
