USF Rolls Out Welcome Mat for New Students
Week of Welcome celebrates arrival of new and returning students to campus.
TAMPA, Fla. (Aug. 11, 2010) – The University of South Florida is preparing for the arrival of over 4,600 first-year students and approximately 3,500 transfer students for the Fall 2010 semester. These students will receive a huge welcome in the form of one of the largest campus-wide programs, USF's Week of Welcome. Known as WOW, this 10-day program consists of over 115 events hosted by university departments, academic colleges and student organizations. WOW will officially kick off on Wednesday, Aug. 18 and end on Saturday, Aug. 28.
The purpose of the USF Week of Welcome (WOW) is to energetically engage all USF students and encourage their active participation in the community by exposing them to opportunities for involvement and interaction with their peers, faculty, and staff. By getting involved, both academically and socially, Week of Welcome inspires Bull Pride and excitement in their new home, and provides them with numerous opportunities to share their experiences with other students.
“This year the WOW committee challenged our event sponsors to think more about intentionality for our new students when designing their events,” said Jessy Rosenberg, associate director for New Student Connections & WOW committee chair. “As a result, we are happy to see that the event sponsors have found creative ways to help our new students feel comfortable and welcomed to their new home.”
“I enjoy so many things about WOW,” said Liz Ehiogu, senior. “I enjoy the fact that we get to continually meet new people, show our school spirit, introduce new students to departments and student organizations and just show everyone what USF is all about.”
On the new Week of Welcome website, www.usf.edu/wow, students can view a snap-shot of the next five upcoming events on the homepage, extended office hours for the first week of classes, helpful links for new students and a list of campus traditions that occur during WOW. This website also has the complete list of events that will make up the Fall Week of Welcome.
All members of the USF community can help welcome new and returning students by attending WOW events or assisting with the Campus Information Stations, located in various areas on the first two days of classes (Aug. 23 and 24). Please click here to volunteer at a station.
Faculty and staff are also encouraged to attend the WOW Kick-Off on Aug.18, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. taking place at the Marshall Student Center Plaza.
This year USF will celebrate the 50th anniversary of students taking classes on campus. An event to kickoff the 50th Anniversary of the Division of Student Affairs will be held on Thursday, Aug. 26 from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the USF Sun Dome prior to the annual Round-Up celebration.
