Staff Senate Supports Student Success

When Christine Chefalas attended the Student Success Conference in late 2010, she left wondering how she could get involved.

Chefalas, president of the USF Staff Senate, decided to ask her fellow senators to consider how they could support student success.

"We heard about the Student Success initiative, and we wanted to find our place and figure out how we could contribute," said Chefalas. "One of our senators, Ruby Jackson, suggested we host a baked goods giveaway."

So the group hosted the giveaway during finals week in mid-December. The senators greeted students, wished them luck on their final exams, and provided them with free baked goods and bottled water.

"It was great. The students were so pleased and thankful, and it was nice for us to feed off their energy. We were excited to talk with them and let them know we are here on campus to serve them. It was a great interaction."

Chefalas says the senate plans to host a similar event this semester, adding that other staff members are getting involved as well. For example, the staff senators on the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus just hosted their own baked goods giveaway during Week of Welcome.

Chefalas is convinced there are staff members all over campus who are committed to student success, with each contributing in their own way. She encourages her fellow staff members to look for ways to get involved.

"I think if staff members knew how much fun we had, and how great it was to interact with students, they would want to be a part of this."
