Black Emphasis Month Ongoing

Black Emphasis Month at USF features many Greek-sponsored events and has something for everyone.

TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 1, 2011) – “Achievement and Progression” is the theme of this year’s University of South Florida Black Emphasis Month Celebration which kicked off Feb. 1 in the Marshall Student Center Amphitheater.

"I think there's something for everyone at all the events, for people of all nationalities," said Alexandria Searls, Black Emphasis Month chair.  "Everyone involved has worked really hard to make it fun, educational, and a way to showcase our history to the USF community.  We hope to see a good turnout."

Highlights include a Black Day of Service, Feb.  5, from 8 a.m. to noon and the 1st Miss Africa Pageant that evening in the MSC Oval Theater from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. sponsored by the African Student Association.    

The following week, the annual Prayer Breakfast will be held Feb. 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in MSC 2708.  During the next week, on Feb. 15 the 2011 Student Leadership Luncheon will be held in USF Traditions Hall from noon to 1:30 p.m. and closing week three will be a Custodial Appreciation reception in MSC 2708, 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Feb. 18 followed by a National Council of Negro Women, Inc.-sponsored “My Black is Beautiful” program that evening in MSC Oval Theater from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.   And in the final week, on Feb. 22, a Fashion Show will be held in the MSC Ballroom from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.   Progressive Black Men will hold their annual Black Faculty Appreciation luncheon in MSC 3707 from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 24.

The USF chapters of the leading national Black fraternities and sororities are sponsoring numerous events: 

·         Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is presenting Phrozen Mic Feb. 7; the annual Gospel Explosion in the MSC Ballroom form 11:06 a.m. to 1:06 p.m. Feb. 13; an all-day Valentine’s Day event in the MSC Atrium, Ice Cold Valentines; and A Phi A Unplugged, at Beef O’Brady’s Feb. 17 from 8:06 p.m. to 9:06 p.m.; Yardrunners Yard Show Feb. 18 in the MSC Amphitheater from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and State of the Black Union Feb. 25 in MSC 2708 from 7:06 p.m. to 8:06 p.m. 


·         Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is holding an event called Don’t Call it a Comeback Feb. 3, from 8:13 p.m. to 10:13 p.m. in MSC 2708 and Geek’d Up Feb. 21 from 8:13 p.m. to 10:13 p.m.


·         The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. chapter will present Pearlfect Health Feb. 4 in MSC 2709 from 12:08 p.m. to 3:08 p.m.; Pink in MSC 2709 from 7:08 p.m. to 9:08 p.m. on Feb. 10; their Valentine’s event is Every Kiss Begins with “K” from 11:08 a.m. to 2:08 p.m.;  and Amerakan Dream will be presented Feb. 17 in MSC Ballroom A from 7:08 p.m. to 9:08 p.m.


·         Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. will host Harlem After Dark Feb. 10 in MSC 2708 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.


·         Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority, Inc. presents Poetic in Pink from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Feb 2.

The Black Student Union, which pulled the program together, is closing out the month-long celebration with its own special event, Black Love, in the MSC Ballroom Feb 28 from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
