TAMPA, Fla. (Apr. 22, 2011) – A scholarship has been established in memory of USF student Amy Leah Ryan, an Honors College senior who tragically died in a diving accident April 17 in Citrus County.
The Ryan family has designated the USF Foundation for contributions to the Amy Leah Ryan Memorial Scholarship Fund in the USF Honors College to honor Amy forever by helping others.
Online gifts may be made at http://www.usf.edu/ua/DEPT?a=DEPT019 or checks payable to the USF Foundation may be sent to USF Honors College, Development Department, 4202 E. Fowler Ave., SVC 1088, Tampa, FL 33620.
Ryan, of Palm Bay, was swimming with friends at a spring in Chassahowitzka. The group was swimming through an underwater tunnel. Ryan failed to surface after a dive.
Ryan, who was planning to attend medical school next year, will receive her degree posthumously.
“Amy had sparkle,” said Stuart Silverman, dean of the Honors College. “I would see her often and she was always enthusiastic, happy, productive and looking forward to her next challenge. She worked hard in school in a tough major, had a demanding job as a server 20-25 hours a week, shadowed two physicians and volunteered her time to help others.”
Silverman said Ryan was ecstatic after being accepted to Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.
“She was quite a young woman,” he said, “someone who others could learn much from.”- Media Contact: Lara Wade, 813-974-9060.
