USF Chief Operating Officer Named
USF President Judy Genshaft announces retired Air Force colonel will join the university’s senior leadership team.
TAMPA, Fla. (June 22, 2011) - John W. Long, a veteran U.S. Air Force officer who most recently ran the day-to-day support activities at Andrews Air Force Base, including flight line infrastructure support for Air Force One, has been selected as USF’s Chief Operating Officer, USF President Judy Genshaft announced Wednesday.
Long, a University of South Florida alumnus with a bachelor’s of arts in business management will serve as a key member of the President’s senior leadership team and oversee the university’s business functions. Long was selected after a nationwide search. The COO role will focus on human capital/resources, services and infrastructure, safety and security, and business operations that impact a cross section of faculty and employees.
“Col. Long has a distinguished record in serving our country and will bring his record of excellence to USF,” Genshaft said. “As chief operating officer, he will play an integral role in making the university more efficient while we continue serving the needs of our students, faculty, staff and the Tampa Bay community.”
Long retired in June as Mission Support Group Commander for the 11th Wing at Andrews Air Force Base, a post he’d held since 2009. In that role, Long led a wide array of services supporting five Air Force wings as well as providing support for the U.S. Navy, Army, Coast Guard and other high-level government agencies.
Also falling under his responsibility was the storied base’s $80 million budget for fire, rescue, public works, contract, vehicle operations, maintenance, shipping, security and canine support. His most high-profile duties, however, involved providing direct support services in logistics, infrastructure and security for the President of the United States, the Vice President, members of the Cabinet and Congress and foreign heads of state.
In previous assignments, Long served as executive officer to the Commander for U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Director of Budget for the Air Force Education and Training Command, and Comptroller for Air Force Cyber Command (Provisional). He also holds a master of science in strategy, doctrine and international security affairs from the Air Force’s selective Air University and a master of arts in human resource management from Webster University.
Long leads a family tradition of attending USF. He graduated from USF in 1982, as did his wife Carol in 1983. His two children, Patrick and Shannon, are currently USF seniors and four other family members are either alumni or soon to be enrolled.
"I am honored to have been selected for this critical position,” Long said. “I believe my 27 years in the Air Force has prepared me well to be a member of the USF team that will tackle the many challenges ahead for the USF System, as we continue to move forward while maintaining USF's standards for excellence.”
