Iran and Saudi Arabia: Natural Rivals?
USF Middle East expert says the relationship between the two countries is getting more strained and delicate.
TAMPA, Fla. (Oct. 12, 2011) – Mohsen M. Milani, professor and chair of the University of South Florida’s Department of Government & International Affairs, said the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran is heating up over both energy and political policies in the region.
In an article in Foreign Affairs, published by the Council on Foreign Relations, Milani provides insight into the depth of the rivalry, which took on a new twist Tuesday after the United States accused Iran of plotting to assassinate Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the U.S.
In his article, Milani called the bizarre incident “just the latest story in the intricate cold war now developing between Iran and Saudi Arabia.”
