TAMPA, Fla. (Dec. 7, 2011) – The University of South Florida Library on the Tampa campus was evacuated for more than an hour and a half Wednesday afternoon after a suspicious object was discovered in a box donated to the library’s Special Collections Section.

The object, which was determined to be a live explosive device, was removed from the library by the Tampa Police Department’s Explosives Disposal Unit and detonated at an isolated area.

University Police evacuated floors 3, 4 and 5 of the library after being notified of the suspicious device around noon. The object resembled an antique war relic from World War I or World War II.

Tampa Police explosives experts, along with Tampa Fire Department personnel, were brought in.

The device was removed around 1:40 p.m. and the library was reopened.
