Special Report: USF Celebrates National Student Employment Week
Activities will take place April 9 - 13 across campus to recognize the benefits of working on campus.
TAMPA, Fla. (April. 5, 2012) – From helping to manage the campus dining halls to critiquing resumes and providing IT support, student employees at the University of South Florida are an important part of the fabric of student life on campus.
Next week, USF will celebrate those students during National Student Employment Week, a country-wide effort to recognize the importance of the student work experience, with a series of activities across campus and student employees featured every day on USF News.
Studies have shown that students who spend more time on campus, including working, are more involved with campus activities, have better networking skills, and excel academically.
Those who have worked off-campus know the frustrations of balancing work and school when you have an inflexible boss or driving time to account for. But those students who work on campus relish flexible scheduling, being able to park and stay on campus all day, and many more benefits.
Student Employment@USF, part of the Student Success movement run by Human Resources and the Career Center at USF, began in December 2010 to encourage more students to work on campus.
USF has more recently started working with higher education consultants Noel-Levitz to develop a strategic enrollment plan. A paper they recently published said student employees help universities extend their available resources and meet staffing needs.
In return, students get valuable real-world experience and typically perform better academically because they’re spending more time on campus, getting to know professors and administration, and are able to take the time off to study and work on class projects.
There are students employed in nearly every College and department at USF, as well as University affiliates like Aramark Dining Services and Barnes and Noble.
Students can apply for on-campus jobs at Careers@USF.
