USF Enters Elite Class in Research Expenditures

The University of South Florida now ranks 50th in the nation for research expenditures, among all U.S. universities, public or private. The new ranking by the National Science Foundation places USF in the elite class of research universities, joining Johns Hopkins, Stanford, Yale and Harvard within the top rankings nationwide. USF is second in Florida only to the University of Florida.

A University of South Florida engineering professor and a team of researchers have found that mucilage from the common and easily grown prickly pear cactus – already known to clean toxic compounds from drinking water – also works as a natural, non-toxic dispersant for oil spills.



Tree Plantings Celebrate Earth Day

The University of South Florida Friday hosted a colossal tree-planting event in honor of Earth Day and USF’s designation as a National Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. Plaques were dedicated to USF President Judy Genshaft for her sustainability efforts, in memory of Provost Ralph Wilcox’s late wife, Barbara Wilcox, and to the Arbor Day Foundation.
