TAMPA, Fla. (June 28, 2012) – The University of South Florida’s Center for India Studies, part of USF World, will introduce an undergraduate certificate in India Studies this fall. Offering a broad curriculum that focuses on history, geography, society, politics, language, culture, philosophy and religion in India, the certificate is designed to give students an informative introduction to Indian society.

The certificate is open to students of all majors and requires a total of 16 to 20 credit hours to complete. One of the highlights of the certificate is a study abroad component. Students can choose to substitute coursework with one of many study abroad programs to India for six credits.

Gurleen Grewal, director of the Center for India Studies, said students are already showing an interest in the program. “We want students to come away with a really strong foundation on what makes contemporary India what it is today.”

She emphasized that while study abroad is an excellent option to gain a front row experience to the Indian culture, students who choose not to leave the U.S. learn a lot from the certificate, as well. “We want to help them become global citizens and we’re happy the Center can contribute.”

Initially, the Center expects anywhere from five- to 10 students to participate in the program. Given the growing interest and the increasing number of study abroad programs to India, there are high expectations for the future.

Associate Vice President for Global Academic Programs Roger Brindley thinks it’s important to add an academic component to a culture that is otherwise well-recognized on campus.

“The purpose of the certificate is to bring academic recognition to the rich heritage of the Indian culture, adding an academic emphasis to the world’s largest democracy and a critical partner of the United States,” Brindley said. “We expect this certificate will intrigue USF students and will be a transformative experience.”
