TAMPA, Fla. (April 5, 2013) – You see them everywhere – from driving the Bull Runner, to instructing fitness classes to tutoring other students: more than 4,000 student employees make up a crucial cog in the clockwork of the University of South Florida.
On Monday, USF honors its student employees by celebrating National Student Employment Week from April 8-12. Hosted by Human Resources, NSEW aims to raise awareness and recognize the valuable contributions student employment programs make to colleges and universities through a weeklong series of activities.
At USF, student employees average almost 10 hours a week and $9.23 per hour. Studies have shown the students that work on campus tend to be more successful academically, feel more connected to the university and possess superior networking skills than their peers with off-campus jobs.
“This is USF’s second year celebrating National Student Employment Week and we are adding an inaugural recognition program,” said Cynthia Bacheller, manager of Student Employment in HR. “This year we are going to launch a Student Employee of the Year and a Supervisor of Student Employees of the Year program.”
An email went out to all student employees and their supervisors in February encouraging students to nominate their supervisor and supervisors to nominate a student employee. USF’s National Student Employment Committee, comprised of representatives from Human Resources, Auxiliary Services, the Career Center, New Student Connections, and Student Affairs judged and scored the nominations, selecting a student employee and supervisor winner.
Winners are given the opportunity to become part of the physical structure of USF by having their name engraved on an 8” x 8” paver to be placed in the Marshall Student Plaza walkway.
The National Student Employment Committee is determined to make both NSEW and the Student Employee and Supervisor of the Year awards ongoing traditions for USF. The Student Employment Recognition Fund was created in an effort to help sustain NSEW going forward.
"The National Student Employment Week tradition and Student Employment Recognition program are reliant on this fund to continue,” said Bacheller. “Any contribution is helpful in sustaining our efforts from year to year.”
NSEW, running concurrently with USF Week, is also partnering up with Campus Recreation to help debut another new tradition: the UnBullievable Race. Modeled after the Amazing Race, student teams face physical and mental challenges while completing a variety of tasks across campus. The first three teams finished win gift cards from SweetBay Supermarket ranging from $100 to $500.
Another new HR initiative, the Student Employment Skills Certificate Program, has proven to be very popular since its January debut. With more than 220 students on the certificate waiting list, the program was created to prepare students to meet the needs of employers by learning valuable office skills such as creating forms, performing mail and email merges, and using simple formulas in Microsoft Excel. The program also teaches soft skills such as office etiquette, appropriate attire, and customer service.
“We surveyed hiring departments and job seekers to determine what student job skills were needed by on-campus hiring departments and we designed a certificate program to teach and assess these skills,” said Bacheller. “This program will help meet the needs of our hiring departments while also helping our student job seekers be more competitive in their job search.”
