Transcript: Spring 2013 President's Report: A Video Message for the USF Community
Hello, this is Judy Genshaft, President of the University of South Florida System.
We've wrapped up another academic year and celebrated more than six thousand new degrees in the USF System this semester alone.
We’ve never been more focused and committed to building the university’s national and international reputation for academics and research.
We are greatly appreciative to the people of Florida and state leaders in Tallahassee for working with us this spring to make our strategic vision for the university a reality and for restoring $300 million dollars cut from the State University System in 2012.
This year the state legislature decided to support one of our most exciting projects - the USF Heart Institute - where our physicians and researchers will develop personalized treatments to combat heart disease.
We are also thankful for the legislature’s support for a new College of Business building at USF St. Petersburg and for the ongoing completion of the Interdisciplinary Sciences building at USF Tampa.
And we are grateful for the two million dollars lawmakers set aside for USF Sarasota-Manatee and Mote Marine Laboratory to fund an innovative partnership in science, technology, engineering and math education.
This support ensures that USF can fulfill its commitment to our students and the general public to provide the leading-edge education and research that improves lives.
So many USF students are making a name for themselves already.
This spring, the College of Business’s 25 Under 25 recognized those who have wasted no time in making a big first impression in their studies and internships and even in their very own start-up businesses.
These students are amazing – some of them are the first in their families to attend college, others are working on triple majors while being deeply involved in their communities through volunteer work.
And we celebrated the entrepreneurial spirit of our alumni in the inaugural Fast 56 Awards presented by the USF Alumni Association, which recognized the fastest growing USF Bull-owned or Bull-led businesses in the world.
We know we can’t create a brighter future or solve lasting problems with the same old solutions.
That’s why we are so excited that the Morsani College of Medicine’s first class of SELECT students is on its way to the Lehigh Valley Health Network in Pennsylvania for two years of clinical training.
These students were recruited for their high-degree of emotional intelligence and team building skills, in addition to meeting our high-standards for medical school admission.
Now they will put their advanced skills to work for their patients.
Without a doubt, we are very proud of the many ways USF students are making an impact both near and far.
Congratulations to the USF Men’s Golf Team for their first ever Big East Championship!
This is how they were celebrated in New York’s Times Square!
Isn’t it spectacular!
USF positively shines for all to see!
And congratulations to our Bulls Softball team on their first-ever Big East tournament title.
They are on their way to the NCAA regionals and another shot at the Women's College World Series!
And that brings me to a final, personal note I’d like to share with you.
I could not let the summer study abroad season begin without mentioning a program near and dear to my heart: The Genshaft/Greenbaum Passport Scholars program.
Now in its second year, many USF students have been able to participate in international education and service programs all over the world, from Malaysia and Australia to Brazil and Peru.
I know their lives and their perspective on the world have blossomed in their journeys.
When they graduate, they will be great ambassadors of USF – skilled, educated and ready to let that adventurous, entrepreneurial spirit lead them to success.
I'd like to thank the faculty and staff for working so hard to make USF a Top 50 research university nationally and for their unwavering commitment to student success.
From all of us at the University of South Florida System, have a wonderful summer and we’ll see you again soon.
