UPDATE 2: The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office confirms suspect Charlie Christopher Bates is now in custody. According to Hillsborough County Public Schools, the lockdown has been lifted for all schools in the USF area impacted by the suspect search.
UPDATE 1: Local law enforcement has identified a suspect as 24-year-old Charlie Christopher Bates. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Bates is 5'9", 160-170 pounds, shoulder length dreadlocks that he wears in a ponytail, with multiple tattoos on arms and neck. Law enforcement continues to search for him. Remain vigilant and call 911 immediately if you have any information.
TAMPA, Fla. (Sept. 6, 2013) — The University Police Department urges the USF community to remain vigilant and call 911 immediately to report any suspicious activity after a series of crimes north of campus late Thursday night and early Friday morning. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office continues to search for a suspect wanted in connection with a series of armed assaults and home invasions. Due to the search, USF Patel Elementary and Pizzo Elementary are among the schools placed on modified lockdown by Hillsborough County Public Schools. According to HCSO, the incidents occurred near 42nd Street, north of East Fletcher Avenue. Deputies describe the suspect as a black male between 20 and 30 years old.
