USF System to Confer Record Nearly 6,500 Degrees

Spring commencement ceremonies across the University of South Florida System scheduled for May 2-5.



TAMPA, Fla. (April 28, 2014) – The University of South Florida System will confer approximately 6,431 degrees during spring commencement ceremonies May 2- 5. The total is the highest number of degrees conferred in any single commencement in USF history. The increase is largely a result of USF’s continuing efforts to improve its six-year graduation rate, which has already risen to 63 percent- an institutional record and a 15 percent jump from five years ago.


During the 1:30 p.m. ceremony on Friday, May 2, Stuart Silverman, dean of the Honors College, will receive the President’s Fellow Medallion. Silverman is retiring after 44 years at USF, a period spanning more than three-quarters of the university’s history. He’s been the head of the Honors program for 27 years, the longest anyone has ever led an academic program at USF.


For the past 26 years, Silverman has also served as the announcer at graduation, reading nearly 100,000 names of graduates. The afternoon ceremony on May 2 will be his final time behind the microphone.


USF System President Judy Genshaft will preside over the following ceremonies at the USF Sun Dome:


*Friday, May 2: 1:30 p.m. ceremony will recognize undergraduates from the College of Arts & Sciences, only from departments beginning with A-E. More than 800 graduates are anticipated.


*Friday, May 2: 6 p.m. ceremony will recognize undergraduates from the Colleges of Arts & Sciences - only from departments beginning with G - W. More than 850 graduates are anticipated.


*Saturday, May 3: 9 a.m. ceremony will recognize undergraduates from College of Behavioral and Community Sciences and College of Business. More than 900 graduates are anticipated.


*Saturday, May 3: 1:30 p.m. ceremony will recognize undergraduates from Colleges of Education, Engineering, Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, The Arts and Undergraduate Studies. More than 950 graduates are anticipated.


*Saturday, May 3: 6 p.m. ceremony will recognize graduate students from all colleges. More than 850 graduates are anticipated.


In addition, commencement for USF St. Petersburg students is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 4 at the Mahaffey Theatre and USF Sarasota-Manatee at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 5 at the Bradenton Area Convention Center.


A total of 22 students in the USF System have been identified as King O’ Neal Scholar candidates, earning a cumulative grade point average of 4.0.


Dazaun Soleyn, a first generation college graduate earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Modern Dance, will be recognized as the Outstanding Graduate by the USF Alumni Association.
