Transcript: Summer 2014 President's Report

Hello, I am Judy Genshaft, President of the University of South Florida System.

It’s hard to believe our academic year is over so quickly!

USF has just had the biggest commencement in its history!

Across the USF System, we conferred nearly 6 thousand 4 hundred degrees last month.

The increase is largely the result of USF’s continuing focus on student success.

In fact, USF has one of the fastest growing graduation rates among public research universities nationwide.

We are proud of our graduates!

Under new performance standards set by the state and the Florida Board Of Governors, USF earned second-place among the state's universities and will now have even more resources to devote to our learning environment.

We’ve also had one of our most successful legislative sessions in recent history and we are so thankful to our state senators, representatives and the Governor who worked to make a significant investment in our state university system.

The USF System will benefit from additional funding that will support our students, help us maintain our campus infrastructure and expand our scientific and research capacities.

One of our most important initiatives is the Florida Center for Cybersecurity, which will advance research and career training to counteract cyber attacks and data theft – one of the nation’s most serious criminal and security issues.

This funding allows USF to create partnerships with industry and other Florida universities to quickly launch new training programs that will prepare new graduates and working professionals to meet the great demand for skilled employees.

The Legislature and the Governor were also supportive in funding the construction of a new College of Business at USF-St.Petersburg, the Heart Institute and the new USF Health and Morsani College of Medicine and programs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math at USF Sarasota- Manatee.

We’re thankful our state leaders are making an investment in the people of Florida, which will pay dividends for decades to come.

Our goal is to ensure the entire Tampa Bay region is prepared to take advantage of the growing knowledge economy in our state.

That’s why the USF System was also thrilled to play a leading role in an ambitious effort to align university and college degrees with the state’s workforce needs.

The Florida’s Board of Governors awarded the partnership of USF, Florida International University and the University of Central Florida $8.5 million dollars for two projects that will serve that purpose.

The Targeted Educational Attainment grants are designed to produce more graduates for careers in the state’s highest-need areas.

USF is a partner in two grants: one that will focus on information technology and a second that will increase the number of accounting graduates with advanced skills.

The end of the academic year is a great time of celebration all across our campuses – the future truly has never been more promising for our university, our region and our state.

Have a wonderful summer and Go Bulls!
