New Mailer Review Features Tributes From Noted Writers, Celebrities
TAMPA, Fla. (Sept. 26, 2008) - Where might you expect to find television interviewer Charlie Rose, fashion editor Tina Brown, authors Don DeLillo, Philip Roth, E. L. Doctorow, Gunter Grass, Christopher Hitchens, William Kennedy, David Ebershoff, Lawrence Schiller and actor Sean Penn together with noted Random House’s Gina Centrello, attorney Sam Radin, poker player Pater Alson, Congressman Neil Abercrombie, attorney Ivan Fisher, and Lonnie Ali, wife of Muhammad Ali – all in the same place? A great cocktail party, perhaps, but the actual answer is intriguing and inviting: the new 2008 issue of The Mailer Review devoted to a wide-ranging reflection on the life of Norman Mailer. The issue comes out Oct. 1.
These contributors are joined by authors Gay Talese, Dotson Rader, Julian Newman, Mailer's children (Susan, Danielle, Elizabeth, Kate, Michael, Stephen, Maggie, Matthew and John Buffalo) and too many more to list, with memorial tributes in the form of articles, essays and poems about or inspired by Mailer. In addition, three of Mailer's works, "What's Wrong with America," "The Bodily Functions Blues," and an acceptance speech are also part of the collection.
"In terms of quality and quantity, this volume is without a doubt an unprecedented compendium devoted to the life and work of a major contemporary American author," said Phillip Sipiora, Review editor and professor of English at the University of South Florida. "The fact that it is Norman Mailer makes it all the more exciting because he developed such a diverse following during his lifetime. This celebration of his life and work is a treasure."
The Mailer Review is sponsored by USF and The Norman Mailer Society. This issue is the second volume of the first publication of its kind dedicated to the renowned novelist, journalist, playwright, screenwriter, poet and film director. Sipiora is the author of Reading and Writing About Literature.
